Most woodworking advice starts with which tool to buy. This starts with the joint, because the joint is what decides whether the piece holds together — and almost every joint here can be cut with tools you already own.
Woodworking gets taught backwards. The usual path is to buy a table saw, then a planer, then a jointer, and to arrive at real joinery two years and several thousand dollars later. It works, but it is the slow road, and plenty of people quit somewhere along it.
Why this site starts with joints
A joint is the decision that survives everything else. The wrong one opens up in a season, splits a panel, or drops a shelf — and no amount of finish hides it. The right one holds for decades in a piece cut with a hand saw. Once you can pick and cut the joint a build needs, the rest is procedure.

Questions people ask first
What is the strongest wood joint?
For frame construction, a well-fitted mortise and tenon: it resists racking better than dowels, pocket screws or biscuits because the glue line runs across a large long-grain surface rather than into end grain. But strongest is rarely the question worth asking. A joint only has to be stronger than the loads it will see, and the joint that fails most often is the one cut badly, not the one chosen badly.
Do I need a table saw to start?
No. A hand saw, a chisel, a marking gauge and a way to hold the work will cut every joint on this site. Machines make joints faster and more repeatable; they do not make them possible. Buying tools before you know which joints you use is how people end up with a jointer they run twice a year.
Why do my joints have gaps?
Almost always marking rather than cutting. A pencil line is about half a millimetre wide and a knife line is not, so cutting to the wrong side of a thick line loses the fit before the saw touches the wood. Mark from a single reference face, use a knife, and cut on the waste side.
How long should I wait before finishing a project?
Long enough for the glue to cure fully rather than just set, which is usually 24 hours for PVA, and long enough for the wood to reach the humidity of the room it will live in. Finishing a panel that is still losing moisture is a common way to end up with a split top a month later.
